Limits:

  • Essential: No additional death benefit
  • Advantage: $10,000 per person
  • Signature: $50,000 per person

Availability, limits and deductibles may vary by state and policy.

How does this coverage help?

A serious auto accident can create unexpected expenses for loved ones. Accidental Death coverage provides an additional benefit when an eligible insured’s death results directly from a qualifying auto accident, helping offer financial support during a difficult time.

This coverage:

  • Pays a supplementary death benefit when a policyholder or resident family member dies as a direct result of a qualifying auto accident.
  • Applies when the policyholder or resident family member is occupying a vehicle while wearing a seat belt or is struck as a pedestrian by a motor vehicle.
  • Is paid to the beneficiary in the order of priority defined in the endorsement, up to the amount shown on your declarations page.

When does this coverage apply?

This coverage applies when:

  • Death is the direct result of an auto accident.
  • The accident is the proximate cause of death, and death occurs within 90 days of the accident.
  • Proof of death and required documentation are provided.

Real-life scenarios

Fatal accident

A policyholder with a Signature auto policy is involved in a serious auto accident while wearing a seat belt. The injuries result in the policyholder’s death within 90 days of the accident. No other exclusions apply, so a $50,000 supplementary death benefit is paid to the named beneficiary, subject to the proper documentation.

Pedestrian struck by a car

A policyholder with an Advantage auto policy is walking their dog and is struck by a vehicle, resulting in the policyholder’s death on the day of the accident. No other exclusions apply, so a $10,000 supplementary death benefit is paid to the named beneficiary, subject to the proper documentation.

Passenger in a non-policy vehicle

A policyholder is involved in an accident as a passenger in a non-policy vehicle while wearing a seat belt, resulting in them passing away five days after the accident. The policyholder carries a Signature auto policy with Amica. No other exclusions apply, so a $50,000 supplementary death benefit is paid to the named beneficiary, subject to the proper documentation.

What isn’t covered?

Accidental Death coverage does not apply in certain situations, including:

  • Accidents arising from auto business activities
  • When the deceased was not wearing a seat belt while occupying the vehicle
  • When the deceased was occupying a motorcycle, moped or similar vehicle
  • Racing, speed contests or organized driving events
  • Use of a vehicle for compensation (taxi, rideshare, Uber/Lyft, DoorDash/Grubhub, etc.)
  • Use of a vehicle while consuming alcohol, drugs or illegal substances

Is this coverage right for you?

Accidental Death coverage can be a good fit if you want an added layer of financial support for your loved ones in the event of a fatal auto accident.

It may be a good fit if:

  • You want help covering immediate expenses that may follow a fatal accident, such as funeral costs and other urgent needs.
  • You’re looking for a simple supplemental benefit in addition to any other financial protection.

FAQs about Accidental Death coverage

The benefit may apply to named insureds and resident family members, subject to the endorsement terms and conditions.

Benefits are paid to the named beneficiary in the order of priority defined in the endorsement, after proof of death and required documentation are provided.

No. This is a supplemental benefit that applies only to qualifying auto accidents, and it’s not intended to replace life insurance.

It may. The endorsement can provide benefits if an eligible insured is struck as a pedestrian by a motor vehicle, subject to the coverage’s definitions, conditions and exclusions.

The accidental death benefit is shown as a per person amount. If multiple eligible insureds pass as the direct result of the same qualifying accident, a benefit may be payable for each eligible insured.

This is a supplemental benefit rather than a repair coverage, so a deductible typically does not apply.
