How do I get California earthquake coverage?
Amica partners with GeoVera and the California Earthquake Authority (CEA) to provide important earthquake coverage for California policyholders.
You don’t need to be an existing Amica policyholder to obtain a policy with GeoVera, but Amica can help you as you choose a policy. If you have a home, condo, dwelling or renters policy with Amica, you’re eligible to purchase a residential earthquake insurance policy with the CEA.
Which earthquake provider is right for me?
GeoVera
GeoVera is a stand-alone provider and offers indemnification, restoring your home to its pre-loss condition after a covered event.
It’s the only stand-alone earthquake insurance carrier rated A (Excellent) by AM Best1 and offers flexible limits and a broad range of deductible options, as well as coverage for other structures (pools, sheds, detached garages, etc.) under one policy.
GeoVera has an online portal and the ability to pay via credit card. Customers looking for broader coverage options and who prefer to get a policy and file a claim online may be better suited with GeoVera.
The CEA
The CEA provides most earthquake coverage throughout California. CEA policies are for disaster assistance and are available as a companion to your existing residential policy. A separate policy would be needed for other structures with the CEA.
Customers who would rather have basic catastrophe coverage that adds to their home policy, or prefer to have their claim handled by Amica, may be better suited with the CEA.

CEA is short for the California Earthquake Authority. After the Northridge earthquake, the California Legislature created the CEA in 1996. CEA is a not-for-profit, residential earthquake provider that encourages Californians to reduce their risk of earthquake loss. CEA is a publicly managed, privately funded entity and receives no money from the California state budget, so the budget has no impact on CEA’s ability to pay claims.
A CEA policy is available to any Amica home, condo, dwelling or renters policyholders. An offer of earthquake insurance is mailed to your preferred mailing address when your policy starts.
While earthquake coverage will be provided by CEA, Amica will still handle and respond to a claim if you have one. You may contact Amica directly at 800-242-6422 if you have an earthquake claim.
