Amica Insurance reminds teen drivers to stay safe during prom season

LINCOLN, RI – Prom season is an exciting time of year for teenagers across the country, but it also brings an increase in accidents and deaths caused by reckless driving. That’s why Amica Insurance reminds parents to talk with their teenagers about the importance of driving safely on prom night.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, car crashes are the leading cause of death among American teens, accounting for more than one third of all deaths of 16-to 18-year-olds.

“Inexperience and immaturity combined with drinking and careless driving can be deadly for teens,” said Anthony Noviello, an assistant vice president with Amica. “That’s why it’s so important for parents to talk with their teens about the dangers of drinking and distracted driving, especially during prom season.”

“If your teen is driving on prom night, limit the number of passengers they have in the car and know their plans for the night,” Noviello said. “If they aren’t driving, remind them to never get in a car with someone who has been drinking.”

Parents should also know the location of post-prom parties and the adults that will be there, Noviello said. And remind your teen that you, or another responsible adult, can always give them a ride home if needed.

Remind your teen to celebrate responsibly with these additional driving tips:

  • Always wear a seatbelt.
  • Avoid speeding or driving carelessly.
  • Never use your cell phone while driving and avoid other distractions like the radio and other passengers.
  • Call your parents to get a ride if you’re too tired to drive home.
  • Follow all traffic laws and stick to the speed limit.

Share these tips with your teens to make sure they have a safe and memorable night, Noviello said.
