If a warning is issued, it's time to take action.

A hurricane warning means hurricane conditions are expected within the next 24 hours. This gives you time to:

  • Prepare and evacuate, if advised.
  • Review your emergency plan with everyone in the family. Alert local authorities if anyone in your family has special needs or disabilities.
  • Check your emergency supply kit, emergency numbers and
    evacuation plan.
  • Make sure you have food and water supplies to last at least a week.
  • Charge your cell phone and have access to a non-cordless phone.
  • Fill your car with gas.
  • Check for safety hazards around the yard and secure your home.
  • Gather and secure important papers.
  • Make sure you have cash on hand, in case ATMs don't work.
  • Protect family valuables, especially photographs and computer files.
  • Don't forget your pets. Make sure you have plenty of food and water for them, as well as proper identification, immunization records and medications.
If told to evacuate, do so immediately. Follow posted evacuation routes. Review your evacuation plans with family members and friends so they will know how to reach you after the storm.
