Liability - Combined Single Limit versus Split Limit: What's the Difference?

A combined "single limit" coverage plan provides one set amount of coverage for bodily injury and property damage in a given incident. "Split limit" coverage provides a set amount of coverage for bodily injury claims and another amount for property damage per incident. Both types of coverage offer policyholders good protection, as long as the coverage limits are adequate.

How Much Is Enough?

Amica recommends a minimum of $500,000 for single limit coverage, which provides coverage of up to $500,000 for all bodily injury and property damage claims in a single incident. Split limit coverage is broken into three parts - bodily injury per person, bodily injury claims per accident and property damage. Amica recommends a minimum split limit coverage of $250/$500/$100, which provides coverage of up to $250,000 per person or $500,000 per accident for bodily injury and $100,000 for property damage. Please note: Some states do not allow insurance companies to offer combined single limit policies, but instead requires split limit coverage. In those states, Amica strongly recommends that policyholders choose coverage limits of at least $250/$500/$100.

The Property Damage Factor

An important factor to consider with split limit coverage is your liability for property damage, including damage to another driver's vehicle or property. Many companies offer $25,000 or $50,000 worth of coverage as part of their split limit policies. But you could easily exceed those limits if you're involved in a multi-car accident. So Amica recommends a minimum of $100,000 property damage coverage in a split level policy. In fact, given inflation and the size of awards in recent court settlements, you may want to consider carrying more than $100,000 worth of coverage for damage to personal property.
