Amica’s 2016 Thanksgiving card features work by Rhode Island artist

11/07/2016

LINCOLN, R.I. – A watercolor painting by 97-year-old Al Albrektson, of West Warwick, Rhode Island, graces the cover of Amica Insurance’s annual Thanksgiving card, which will be mailed to more than 800,000 customers across the country this month.

Albrektson’s painting, titled “Day’s End,” is filled with color – vivid orange, scarlet, gold, purple and deep blue – and ablaze with energy and life. But this is not the first time Albrektson’s work has appeared on Amica’s card. More than 40 years ago, one of his paintings was chosen for the 1973 card – and then again in 1974, 1975, 1995 and 2000.

“I was quite surprised to learn that Amica wanted to put another of my paintings on their Thanksgiving card,” said Albrektson, an Amica policyholder for more than 60 years. “Six times – that’s great!”

“This beautiful painting will hang in our art gallery for many years to come,” said Robert A. DiMuccio, chairman, president and CEO of Amica. “In addition to the beauty and grace these paintings bring to our campus, they are a symbol of Amica’s gratitude to our customers for putting their trust in us.”

Albrektson still paints and teaches painting in his West Warwick studio. In fact, a series of his newest paintings was part of a well-attended show at the Providence Art Club this summer, and Amica’s Thanksgiving painting won a top award at the Rhode Island Watercolor Society earlier this year.

A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Albrektson worked as an illustrator for a Providence advertising agency and then owned a successful advertising art shop for many years before retiring at age 70. Since then, he has focused on painting and teaching.

“Teaching has really opened up new avenues for me,” Albrektson said. “I’ve met some very nice people, and I continue to learn and grow as a painter myself.”
