Amica Insurance announces promotions

LINCOLN, R.I. - Amica Mutual Insurance Company and Amica Life Insurance Company are pleased to announce the following 12 promotions:

James McDermott Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing officer

James McDermott, of Cumberland, Rhode Island, was promoted to senior vice president and chief marketing officer. 

McDermott earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of New Hampshire in 1983, and he has held several management, marketing and research positions throughout his 33-year career with Amica. Over the last 15 years, he has served as general manager of Amica Life Insurance Company and was also responsible for oversight of Amica’s marketing and advertising programs.

In his new role, McDermott oversees the corporate marketing, advertising, communications and digital functions.

David Macedo Vice President and Controller in the accounting department

David Macedo, of Cranston, Rhode Island, was promoted to vice president and controller in the accounting department.  

After receiving a bachelor’s degree from Bryant University in 1985, Macedo earned his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation. He has had various roles in his 27-plus years at Amica, including oversight of internal audit, financial reporting, taxes and compliance and accounting systems.  

In his new role, Macedo is responsible for providing financial information that assists management in making economic decisions for the company.

Karen Baltzer Assistant Vice President in the Sales and Client Services department

Karen Baltzer, of Bellingham, Massachusetts, was promoted to assistant vice president in the sales and client services department. 

Baltzer, a graduate of the University of Akron, started at Amica in 1995 and has worked in the Cleveland, Phoenix, Southern New Jersey, Philadelphia and Greenville (South Carolina) offices. She attained her Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation in 2007.

In her new role, Baltzer oversees Amica’s three service centers in Rhode Island, Indiana and Washington.

Jyotipriya Ajay Assistant Vice President in the Sales and Client services department

Jyotipriya Ajay, of Franklin, Massachusetts, was promoted to assistant vice president in the sales and client services department.

Ajay, originally from Mumbai, India, earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Mumbai University in 2001, and she began working at Amica as an associate account manager in 2006. She has previously served as business process manager, senior business process manager and sales and client services officer. 

Ajay also received her Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation in 2010.

Victoria Benson Assistant Vice President in the Investment department

Victoria Benson, of Mansfield, Massachusetts, was promoted to assistant vice president in the investment department.

Benson, a graduate of Sonoma State University, began working for Amica in its Northern California office in 2004. She transferred to the investment department in 2007 and was promoted to investment officer in 2013.

Benson has earned both the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designations.

Jon Burke Assistant Vice President in the Investment department

Jon Burke, of Cumberland, Rhode Island, was promoted to assistant vice president in the investment department.

Burke, a 2003 graduate of Bryant University, joined Amica in 2005. He was named an investment officer in 2012 and senior investment officer in 2014. 

Burke earned the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 2006, and he is a board member and past president of the CFA Society Providence.

Michael Baker Assistant Vice President in the Accounting department

Michael Baker, of Jamestown, Rhode Island, was promoted to assistant vice president in the accounting department.

Baker earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Boston College in 2002, and received his Certified Public Accounting (CPA) designation in 2006. He started at Amica as a financial reporting and analysis supervisor in 2008, was promoted to financial reporting and analysis manager in 2011, and was named an officer in 2013.

Christopher Biggs Assistant Vice President in the Marketing department

Christopher Biggs, of Ellington, Connecticut, was promoted to assistant vice president in the marketing department.

Biggs earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Connecticut in 1996, and he started at Amica as a communications manager in 2008. He also was recognized with a 40 Under 40 Award from Business New Haven in 2004.

In his new role, Biggs oversees Amica’s advertising and lead generation programs.

Gregory Calderiso Assistant Vice President in the Corporate Information Systems department

Gregory Calderiso, of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, was promoted to assistant vice president in the corporate information systems department.

Calderiso, a graduate of Johnson and Wales, earned a master’s degree from Bryant University in 2009. He began working at Amica in 2008 as an integration specialist, and he was promoted to business applications assistant manager in 2012. Calderiso was then named an information systems officer in 2013.

In his new role, Calderiso oversees the operations of Amica’s shared IT services.

Acel Silva Claims Officer in the Claims Executive department

Acel Silva, of Worcester, Massachusetts, was promoted to claims officer in the claims executive department.

Silva earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and finance from Boston College’s Carroll School of Management in 2002, and he started at Amica as a claims adjuster in the former Worcester office.  He has held a number of different roles at Amica, including claims supervisor, employee relations manager, claims examiner and compliance manager.

Silva has earned his Charter Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation, and in his new role, he oversees claims compliance.

Lisa O'Rourke Information Systems officer in the Corporate Information Systems department

Lisa O’Rourke, of Warwick, Rhode Island, was promoted to information systems officer in the corporate information systems department.

O’Rourke earned a bachelor’s degree from Rhode Island College in 1986, and she joined Amica as an IT programmer trainee that same year. Since then, she has served in a variety of positions, including project manager, business applications section manager and data management section manager. 

In her new role, O’Rourke leads database administration and data management.

Ted Shallcross Senior Vice President and General manager of Amica life Insurance Company

Ted Shallcross, of East Greenwich, Rhode Island, was promoted to senior vice president and general manager of Amica Life Insurance Company.

Shallcross earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and accounting from the College of the Holy Cross in 1995, and he received his Certified Public Accounting (CPA) designation in 1997. Shallcross began his career with KPMG LLP before starting with Amica in 2007.  

In his new role, he oversees all Amica Life activities. 

Shallcross also sits on the Board of Governors of Leadership Rhode Island, serving as treasurer, as well as serving on the Board of Directors of the Providence Children’s Museum.
