SEATTLE – A record 16,000 people took to the streets of Seattle this morning to compete in the 2009 Amica Insurance Seattle Marathon, marking the 39th year the event has been held.
Charlie Sunderlage, 29, of Bellingham, Wash., was the first runner to cross the finish line with a time of 2:32:27. The first female runner to complete the marathon was Lauren Breihof, 20, also of Bellingham, Wash., with a time of 2:58:59.
Today's events included a full 26.2-mile marathon as well as a marathon walk. It also included a 13.1-mile half marathon run and a half marathon walk, in addition to a kids race and a 5k race.
The half marathon was won by Alex Crabill, 21, of Tacoma, Wash. He completed the 13.1 mile course in a time of 1:08:56. The first female to complete the half marathon was Kristi Houk, 25, of Port Orchard, Wash., with a time of 1:22:03. Houk also won the half marathon last year.
