LINCOLN, RI –With winter at our doorstep, now is the time to make sure your car is ready so you don’t find yourself stuck in the cold.
"Winter weather can make driving dangerous,” said Lisa DeCubellis, a senior assistant vice president with Amica Mutual Insurance Co. “That’s why it’s important to make sure your car is prepared to handle snowy and icy conditions, in addition to the cold temperatures.”
Here are a few tips to make sure your car is ready for winter:
• Check the air pressure and tread of the tires. Replace them if they’re worn.
• Make sure the brakes are working properly.
• Test the heater and defroster now, before you need them.
• Check and fill antifreeze and windshield wiper fluids.
• Inspect windshield wiper blades and replace if necessary.
• Keep an emergency kit and blankets in your car.
• Make sure you have plenty of gas at all times.
"Don’t forget to have an ice scraper handy, and you may want to keep a small shovel and some sand in your trunk in case you get stuck,” DeCubellis suggested.
Motorists also need to take extra care when driving in the winter, DeCubellis said. Conditions can change quickly, so be alert.
"When it comes to winter driving, remember to use common sense,” DeCubellis noted. “Watch the road conditions and adjust your speeds accordingly. The most important thing is to make sure you and your passengers are as safe as they can be.”
