LINCOLN, RI – Severe winter weather has already struck several parts of the country, reminding us all of the need to be prepared for snow, ice and freezing temperatures. So Amica Insurance is offering tips to help keep you and your family safe in your home and car this winter.
“'Severe winter weather can leave you without power and heat, sometimes for days at a time,” said Sean Welch a senior assistant vice president with Amica. “That’s why it’s important to be prepared. Make sure you have plenty of emergency supplies at home and in your car. And make sure you have a way to contact all members of your family, especially if you’re not together when a storm hits.”
If a storm is in the forecast, make sure your cell phone is charged and your gas tank is full, Welch said. It’s also important to have enough supplies at home to last you a few days, in case you lose power or become stranded. These should include:
• Extra drinking water
• Non-perishable food
• Prescriptions and other medicines
• Baby supplies
• Flashlights and extra batteries
• A battery-operated radio
• Extra blankets and sleeping bags
• A first aid kit
It’s also a good idea to stock up now on shovels, sand and non-corrosive ice melt, Welch said. Make sure your snow removal equipment, including snow blowers, are ready to run efficiently and safely. And remind everyone of the important safety precautions needed when using this equipment.
Winter storms can also cause dangerous driving conditions, so keep emergency supplies in your car in case you get stuck while traveling, Welch said. These include:
• An ice scraper and brush
• A shovel and a bag of sand for tire traction
• Jumper cables
• A flashlight
• A first aid kit
• Extra winter clothes
Check and update your family’s emergency supply kits often, Welch said. Hopefully you will never have to use them, but it’s better to prepared.
