Amica supports Operation Holiday Cheer for Rhode Island troops overseas

LINCOLN, RI –Amica Insurance is proud to support Operation Holiday Cheer 2010, which provides care packages to Rhode Island National Guard troops stationed overseas during the holidays.

Lt. Governor Elizabeth Roberts was joined earlier this week by corporate and community sponsors as well as members of the RI National Guard at the National Guard Command Readiness Center to detail this year’s efforts, and to issue a request for donations and volunteers.

Roberts explained that the initiative relies on sponsors and the general public for donations to pay for postage and for “wish list” items needed to fill 600 care packages. Volunteers, organized by the state family support program of the RI National Guard, assemble the care packages to be sent, and they’re then sent to troops stationed overseas during the holiday months.

"When our troops are sent overseas it should be our mission to support them and their families," Roberts said. "Operation Holiday Cheer is one way we can show our appreciation for these men and women and provide them with some comfort from home. We know every day away from family and friends is difficult, but it is especially hard during the holiday season. These care packages are the least we can do to show our thanks and remember the troops' continued service to our nation."

Donations will be accepted at the North Main St. Armory in Providence on Saturday, Dec., 11, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The following Saturday, Dec. 18, starting at 9 a.m., volunteers will assemble the care packages and ship the packages overseas with the help of the United States Postal Service.

Monetary donations are also needed to pay for postage costs. Those wishing to donate can send a check to the American Red Cross Rhode Island Chapter to the attention of Operation Holiday Cheer at 105 Gano St., Providence, RI 02906. To pledge a donation, become a partner organization or for more information, please visit the lieutenant governor's website at http://www.ltgov.ri.gov/ohc.

Operation Holiday Cheer includes a host of corporate and community sponsors to date, including Amica and the American Red Cross Rhode Island Chapter, Bank of America, CVS/Caremark, Dunkin' Donuts, Hasbro, Home Depot, National Grid, the New England Patriots, Ocean State Job Lot, the Providence Journal and the United States Postal Service.
