Amica 19.7 Ocean Beach Triathlon
New Event in New London Area

GLASTONBURY, CT –The streets of New London and Waterford, CT will be filled with triathletes on Sunday, July 25, for the Amica 19.7 Ocean Beach Triathlon. The new race, produced by the Hartford Marathon Foundation, will have 400 athletes in a half-mile swim, 16.1-mile bike race and 3.1-mile road race. The event is part of the Amica Triathlon Series, a series of 10 sprint distance events held throughout the country.

After sponsoring the 2009 Niantic Bay Triathlon, Amica expanded its involvement with a new event at Ocean Beach. “Once again, Amica Insurance is thrilled to be an integral part of this exciting triathlon series,” said Robert A. DiMuccio, chairman, president and CEO of Amica Insurance. “Amica understands that to be a triathlete, athletes have to be resilient, dedicated and hardworking to accomplish their goals. Athletes and spectators are in for a treat from the starting gun. Rated as one of the best beaches by National Geographic, Ocean Beach offers an open water swim course with majestic views and clear waters. The half-mile swim is a triangular course, beginning and ending on the mile-long “sugar-sand” beach. The bike course is a 16.1-mile loop through the oceanfront boulevards of New London and Waterford. Long straightaways along flat, sea level roads will make this course popular with both experienced riders and beginners. The run course is a loop of 3.1 miles along Pequot Avenue, completing with a spectacular boardwalk finish.

The race will start at 7 a.m. at Ocean Beach Park. Traffic delays and street closures will take place on roads used for the bike and run course from at 7 to 9:30 a.m. For a detailed route map of affected roads, please visit www.hartfordmarathon.com and click on the Amica 19.7 Ocean Beach page.

Online registration for the race is open until July 20 at 11 a.m. After July 20, registration is only available on site at Ocean Beach Park on July 24 from 4 to 6 p.m. and on race day from 5:30 to 6:30 a.m. Volunteers are still needed to help at registration, assist on the bike and run courses and work at the finish line.
