PAWTUCKET, RI – Five Rhode Island high school baseball teams will be competing at McCoy Stadium this week for the division championships in the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Boys Baseball Championship sponsored by the PawSox and Amica Insurance.
Bishop Hendricken, North Kingstown and North Providence are vying for the Division 1 title, while Mount St. Charles Academy and The Prout School are squaring off for the Division 2 title.
Coaches and players from each of the teams were treated to a barbecue under the tent at McCoy
Stadium during a news conference earlier today, where they met team owner Ben Mondor and president Mike Tamburro.
"We're all excited that the high school kids have the opportunity to play the state championships here," Tamburro said. "It's a great thrill for them, and it's a great thrill for us to host them. We really get a kick out of watching some of the kids play on the field for the first time. I'm sure many of them have sat in the stands and watched a PawSox game, and their mouths watered at the chance to be able to get out there and play themselves. And today's their chance."
The PawSox have been hosting the high school championships at McCoy Stadium for more than 30 years, Tamburro said.
"We're glad they have the chance to show off their skills," said Lou Schwechheimer, vice president and general manager of the PawSox. He advised the ballplayers to enjoy the experience. "Cherish it. Seize the day. And give it your best."
Matt Lazzareschi, sponsorship specialist with Amica, said his company is excited about being able to continue its sponsorship of the baseball playoffs at McCoy Stadium. "Being able to play here, on the same field as countless Red Sox greats - like Jim Rice, Roger Clemens, Dustin Pedroia, Jonathan Papelbon and Clay Bucholtz - is the opportunity of a lifetime."
Tom Mezzanotte, executive director of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League, concurred. "Enjoy the opportunity and make the most of it. And represent your schools, your communities and yourselves the way we know you can."
Kevin Gormley, coach of the North Kingstown High School baseball team, was among the last to speak. "Win or lose, it's really a great experience to be out there - to be able to live in Rhode Island and come back (to McCoy Stadium) and tell people you played out here."
The playoffs will run through Friday. The full schedule is available at the Rhode Island Interscholastic League's website, www.riil.org.
