Amica Insurance today donated $10,000 to the American Red Cross to support the relief and recovery efforts in Haiti.

LINCOLN, RI – Amica Insurance today donated $10,000 to the American Red Cross, Rhode Island chapter, to support the relief and recovery efforts in Haiti after the devastating earthquake that struck there earlier this week.

Jim Will, a senior assistant vice president in Amica's claims executive department, presented the check to Bruce Rutter, CEO of the American Red Cross, Rhode Island chapter.

Will is on the board of directors for the local chapter. "Amica is thrilled to be part of the immediate relief efforts for Haitians who have been devastated by this tragedy," Will said.

Rutter said Amica "was one of the first" Rhode Island businesses to donate to the relief efforts, but he's sure "it will be one of many." He said the money will be used in part to get skilled volunteers to Haiti to help in the recovery efforts, as well as to provide medical supplies and to build tent cities to house the refugees.

"This donation represents Amica's initial response to help the people of Haiti in the quake's immediate aftermath," said Robert A. DiMuccio, chairman, president and CEO of Amica Insurance.

Will, who recently travelled to Haiti as part of his involvement in the World Vision humanitarian charity organization, said Amica also encourages its employees to help. "We encourage employees to consider their own giving to this worthy cause," he said.

Amica also has pledged to match employee donations to the American Red Cross and other approved organizations by donating $1.50 for each $1 donated by an employee through Amica's matching gift program.

"Over the last few days, we've all watched the extraordinary amount of human suffering resulting from the Haitian earthquake," DiMuccio said. "When the extent of this disaster is fully known, it will likely rank as one of the worst on record in the western hemisphere." Rutter said he's grateful for Amica's support in the relief efforts, adding: "It's great having partners like this."
