LEOMINSTER, MA –Habitat for Humanity North Central Massachusetts today celebrated the opening of its ReStore at 637 Lancaster Street (Route 117) in Leominster, and Amica Insurance was proud to show its support as the store’s premier sponsor.
Dozens of people were on hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, including the mayors of Leominster and Fitchburg and officials from three Chambers of Commerce in the region: Nashoba Valley in Devens, North Central Massachusetts in Fitchburg, and Wachusett in Clinton.
"Amica has supported Habitat for Humanity’s home building initiative. And we’re thrilled to be a part of this latest Habitat project. We applaud the ReStore concept and its positive impact on the environment. The store is full of good reusable products. Instead of going to landfills –they now will find new use in good homes,” said Patti Genovese, sponsorship specialist with Amica Insurance.
ReStore will continue the celebration next Saturday, by hosting an all-day public open house, with food and other refreshments served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and free balloons for all youngsters throughout the day.
ReStore is a successful way for local Habitat for Humanity affiliates to raise earned income. “In our non-profit world, it’s important to have a broad base of funding, including individuals, businesses, corporations, government and, when possible, earned income,” said Habitat Executive Director Maggie Monroe-Cassel. “ReStore is a perfect fit because we sell all things related to construction as well as household items like appliances and furniture.”
“We are fortunate to have supporters who share our vision and realize the significance of what we’re doing here,” Monroe-Cassel said. She noted that Amica Insurance stepped forward early to become the premier sponsor of the ReStore, underwriting start-up and initial operating costs of the new store.
Employees of Amica Insurance also have been involved in the ReStore launch by having a few special "donation days” at the company’s headquarters in Lincoln, RI.
"Amica is going well beyond sponsoring our ReStore by planning to send crews of volunteers from their employee ranks to help us build homes in the coming year,” Monroe-Cassel said.
The Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts, The Center for Democracy and Humanity at Mt. Wachusett Community College and Comcast also helped fund the ReStore, according to Monroe-Cassel. “These organizations saw the potential in the concept and helped make our store a reality,” she said.
The ReStore also has two other important roles in the region. First, it serves as an outlet for discounted materials, making it possible for people of all income levels to take advantage of the donated products. Second, ReStores also serve an environmental purpose, keeping tons of material that might be discarded as waste out of our landfills while putting it to good use as recycled and re-used products.
