Avoid a pipe nightmare with tips from Amica

Frozen pipes

12/06/2013

LINCOLN, RI - As colder temperatures set in, frozen pipes pose one of the biggest risks for property damage. That’s why Amica Insurance is sharing tips to help prevent frozen pipes in your home.

According to the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), a single burst pipe can cost more than $5,000 in water damage. Amica is offering the following tips from the IBHS and other sources to avoid damage from frozen pipes:

• Seal cracks and holes in outside walls and foundations with caulking.
• Insulate exposed pipes with rubber sleeves or another form of insulation.
• Make sure a slow drip of water flows through faucets, preferably those on outside walls. Also, leave cabinet doors open or use a fan to increase warm air circulation to these pipes.
• Keep your residence warmer than normal, and leave your thermostat at the same temperature, day and night. If you will be out of your home for an extended period of time, set the thermostat to no lower than 55 degrees.
• Drain the water system if your home will be empty during especially cold temperatures. Shut off the main water valve and, starting with the top floor and working your way down, open all faucets until the water stops running.
