Amica Insurance providing support for IIHS expansion

01/30/2013

LINCOLN, RI – Amica Insurance is pitching in to improve safety on U.S. roads.

As a supporting company of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), Amica is donating $190,000 over a two-year period to help the IIHS fund a major expansion to its Vehicle Research Center. According to a release from the IIHS, the expansion will help to “undertake more rigorous scientific evaluations of crash avoidance systems than the current facility allows.”

“Making our roads safer is an absolute necessity, and Amica is proud to partner with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety to reach that goal,” said Paul Pyne, executive vice president and chief operations officer at Amica. “The expansion of the Vehicle Research Center and subsequent testing will help to reduce accidents out on the road.”

The expansion includes enlarging the outdoor test track to accommodate high-speed maneuvers and human factors research, as well as the construction of a separate covered track, which will be used for more controlled testing and demonstrations. In addition, robotic test equipment will be purchased, and a new laboratory, office and meeting space will be built.

“This expansion will allow insurers to continue to play a lead role in improving highway safety,” said Adrian Lund, president of the IIHS. “The facility will allow us to evaluate vehicle-based crash avoidance systems so we can encourage adoption of the most effective ones, just as our crash test program has encouraged state-of-the-art crashworthiness design.”

The Vehicle Research Center opened in Ruckersville, Va., in 1992, and tests and research conducted there have resulted in life-saving improvements to vehicle design.
