Amica $75,000 Community Challenge now under way
PROVIDENCE, RI – Amica Insurance, in partnership with the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, the United Way of Rhode Island and Crossroads Rhode Island, kicked off the Amica $75,000 Community Challenge this morning, with a 9 a.m. press conference at Crossroads Rhode Island.
The Challenge encourages people and businesses in the community to make donations to the three charitable organizations between now and Wednesday, Feb. 15. Amica will then match those donations, dollar for dollar, up to $25,000 per charity. The charities were chosen with three basic human needs in mind: food (Rhode Island Community Food Bank), heat (United Way of Rhode Island) and housing (Crossroads Rhode Island).
“I really do think we can make a difference with this campaign,” said Vince Burks, communications director at Amica Insurance. “ I’ve always been told, ‘Don’t take anything for granted.’ This is an opportunity for those who don’t take things for granted to give back to people in the community who need these basic necessities.”
“This opportunity by Amica is a great way for donors to double up [on their donations],” said Tony Maione, president and CEO of the United Way of Rhode Island. “It always a good thing when that happens.”
Representatives from the Rhode Island Community Food Bank and Crossroads Rhode Island also spoke at the press conference, highlighting the need to give back to the less fortunate.
“With this money, we will be able to acquire 150,000 pounds of food," said Andrew Schiff, CEO of the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. “The people we serve are very grateful for the food they receive.”
“At Christmas, there were 60 families on the waiting list for shelter,” said Anne Nolan, president of Crossroads Rhode Island. “Today, there are 100 families.”
