Amica Insurance offers tips for safe holiday cooking

11/22/2011

LINCOLN, RI – If you’re cooking for Thanksgiving, please be careful. Cooking fires are more likely to happen on Thanksgiving Day than any other day of the year, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

"Cooking fires can happen to anyone, so it’s important to be extra vigilant this time of year,” said Sean Welch, a senior assistant vice president with Amica Insurance. “It’s easy to become distracted while trying to prepare large meals, especially with family and friends around. But it’s important to pay attention and remain alert.”

Here are a few tips and reminders:

  • Keep materials that can easily catch on fire away from your stovetop.
  • Never wear loose clothing while cooking.
  • Remind children to never go near a stove or cooking appliance.
  • Use the back burner whenever possible.
  • Test smoke alarms throughout the house, but especially around the kitchen.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen at all times.
  • Never use a turkey fryer inside.

“If you’re using a turkey fryer, remember to be extra careful,” Welch said. “Hot oil can easily splash and cause a serious injury. And never put a frozen turkey inside a turkey fryer, because it can cause the hot oil to explode.”

It’s also best to stay away from the kitchen if you’re tired or have been drinking, when you may become more distracted than usual.

“Thanksgiving is supposed to be a joyful time when we spend time with family and friends,” Welch said. “Take a little extra care to keep your Thanksgiving safe and enjoyable for everyone.”
