Amica Insurance employees ‘stuff the bus’ for TAPIN

LINCOLN, RI – There wasn’t an empty seat on the bus when employees at Amica’s corporate headquarters recently gathered to “stuff the bus” with school supplies for TAPIN, a volunteer organization that helps East Bay residents in need.

Employees donated nearly 3,800 school supplies – pens, pencils, crayons, markers, notebooks and more – enough to fill approximately 380 backpacks and bags. They also raised $1,620 through a “yard sale” of promotional items and that money also was donated to TAPIN.

“I am flabbergasted by the enthusiasm shown by Amica employees. It is way beyond what we at TAPIN expected,” said Ann Wood, co-president of TAPIN. “We also could not believe the donation. TAPIN runs on a very tight budget, and our client numbers have increased significantly due to the economy, so this money will help us to buy more food to stock our food closet. Thanks so much to Amica’s employees for all they did to make this happen for us!”

TAPIN – which stands for Touch a Person in Need – is an all-volunteer outreach organization that provides resources and services to residents of Barrington, East Providence, Warren and Bristol. It was founded in 1983 as an information and referral service, but it now has more than 100 volunteers who help collect and distribute food, clothes, household items and furniture to East Bay residents in need.

Dina Bastanzi, who works in Amica’s training and development department and volunteers at TAPIN, suggested the fundraiser for the organization and helped to make it a success. “I honestly can’t tell you how humbling it was to have Amica be part of ‘Stuff the Bus,’ ”Bastanzi said. “It was surreal to see the company, from top to bottom, rally around this cause.”

TAPIN, an all-volunteer outreach organization that provides resources and services for East Bay residents in need, is located at 281 County Road in Barrington. For more information about TAPIN, call 401-247-1444 or visit
