Amica Insurance offers tips to stay safe after Hurricane Irene has passed

08/27/2011

LINCOLN, RI – As Hurricane Irene storms up the coast, Amica Insurance and the American Red Cross offer tips to help keep you and your family safe after the storm has passed.

“Don’t venture outside after the storm until local authorities say it is safe to do so,” said Ted Murphy, superintendent of claims for Amica Insurance. “If you’ve evacuated, do not return home until your neighborhood is declared safe.”

Remember to avoid all power lines, especially those submerged in water or on the ground, Murphy said. If you suspect a gas leak, leave immediately and call the gas company. It’s also important to turn off natural gas or propane tanks, and make sure the main power supply to your house has been turned off.

Here are some other tips:

  • Make sure everyone is safe.
  • Contact family and friends, to let them know you’re okay.
  • Do not drive through flooded roads.
  • Never leave children unattended in flooded areas.
  • Use caution returning to a storm-damaged house.

If possible, remove standing water in your house, Murphy said. Dry and disinfect all wet materials in the house to help prevent mold and mildew. Wear sturdy shoes and protective clothing during cleanup. Remember to take frequent breaks during cleanup and use extreme caution at all times. The damage may be more significant than it appears.

Also, don’t forget to register on the Safe and Well website that people can check to see if their family members are okay. You can access this at www.redcross.org or by calling 800-REDCROSS (800-733-2767).
