Amica Insurance offers boating safety tips
LINCOLN, RI – Summer boating is a great activity for family and friends to enjoy, but it can also be dangerous. So before you head out on the water, make sure you review these boating safety tips from Amica Insurance and the United States Power Squadrons.
“Boating responsibly is all about being alert and careful when taking out your boat, no matter what size,” said Thomas Kemp, manager of marketing and development for the United States Power Squadrons. “Always remember to wear your life jacket every time you’re on the water. Accidents can happen very quickly, so please make sure you and your passengers are safe.”
Following boating rules is important for all boaters, Kemp said. Every boater needs to know what to do when meeting, crossing or overtaking another boat to prevent costly damage to the boat, personal injury or even loss of life.
Here are a few additional tips for safe boating:
- Keep a first-aid kit, flares and a Coast Guard-approved fire extinguisher onboard.
- Always tell someone where you are going and when you will return.
- Check the weather before you leave and bring a radio to monitor weather conditions.
- Only allow experienced drivers to operate the boat.
- Never overload your boat. Follow the listed weight capacity.
- Always use your boat lights in low visibility.
Also, never operate a boat when drinking, Kemp said. “Not only is it illegal, but a boat operator who’s been drinking while boating is 10 times more likely to die in a boating accident than one with a zero blood alcohol level.”
Boaters also should take safe boating courses, whenever possible, Kemp said. “Boating courses from the United States Power Squadrons are available online or in a classroom setting. Boating courses are inexpensive, easy to take, quick and a great way to learn boating safety.”
