PawSox and Amica sponsor baseball championship

LINCOLN, RI – Four high school baseball teams will take to the field at McCoy Stadium starting tonight for the Rhode Island Interscholastic League boys’ baseball division championships, sponsored by the Pawtucket Red Sox and Amica Insurance.

North Kingstown and Cranston West high schools are competing for the Division 1 title, while the Prout School and Johnston High School are vying for the Division 2 title. The games begin at 3:30 p.m.

"We’re all thrilled for these kids who have made it to this point,” said Mike Tamburro, president of the Pawtucket Red Sox. “It’s an amazing opportunity for these teams. For some, this may be their last time playing baseball, and they get to play here at McCoy. These kids will be talking about this for the rest of their lives.”

Coaches, players and school officials representing each team were treated to a barbecue at McCoy Stadium after a news conference earlier today. Among those in attendance were former Red Sox pitcher Ken Ryan, as well as several PawSox officials.

Tom Mezzanotte, executive director of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League, praised the coaches and players for their dedication and hard work throughout the season and wished them well in the championship playoff games.

"Most important, have a lot of fun and cherish every memory you make during these last games,” Mezzanotte told the players. “Keep the same drive and determination you’ve had all season.”

Matt Lazzareschi, sponsorship specialist with Amica, wished the players well, too. “Amica is proud to help provide this opportunity to these teams. This is your moment to bring pride to your schools and represent your communities,” he said.

The best-of-three playoffs will run through Wednesday, with a final championship game on Thursday if needed. For the complete game schedule, visit the Rhode Island Interscholastic League’s website,
